SAT vs TOLC: Which Entrance Test Italy Actually Wants

Students applying to Italy from an international school usually arrive with one of two assumptions: that the SAT will work because it is the test they already know, or that the SAT is useless because Italy runs its own entrance exams. Both are wrong, and the reason is that Italy does not have one admission test. It has a family of them, the rules differ by university and by the language the programme is taught in, and one of the tests you may have researched last year no longer exists.

The three tests, and who uses which

TOLC is the test family run by CISIA, a consortium of Italian universities. The engineering version, TOLC-I, covers mathematics, logic, science and reading comprehension, and it is the standard route into engineering degrees taught in Italian.

CEnT-S is new and it is the piece most guides have not caught up with. From November 2025, CISIA replaced the English-language TOLC tests — English TOLC-E, English TOLC-I and English TOLC-F — with a single unified test, the CISIA English Test for Sciences. It covers admission to degree courses in engineering, economics, pharmacy and other scientific fields. If your target is an English-taught science or engineering degree in Italy, this is the test that applies now, and any advice telling you to sit an English TOLC-I is out of date.

The SAT sits alongside these as an alternative that specific universities choose to accept, on their own terms. It is not a national alternative and there is no general rule.

Bocconi: the SAT as a first-class option

Bocconi in Milan treats the SAT as one of its accepted selection tests, offered as an alternative to the Bocconi online test, with ACT as a third route and LSAT accepted for law. The thresholds are published and firm:

• A total below 1040 is not considered.
• A section score below 520 in either Evidence-Based Reading and Writing or Math is not considered.
• The Bachelor in Mathematical and Computing Sciences for Artificial Intelligence requires at least 600 out of 800 in Math.
• Scores from before 2022 are not considered at all.
• The Bocconi score-report code is 7206. The essay is not required and Subject Tests are not accepted.

If Bocconi is on your list, the SAT is doing real work and a score target makes sense.

Politecnico di Milano: accepted, but read the language column

Politecnico di Milano accepts the SAT as an alternative to its own TOL entrance exam, using the Evidence-Based Reading and Writing and Math sections. This is where most international applicants misread the rule, because the SAT route is aimed primarily at the Italian-taught engineering programmes.

For the 2026/2027 intake, the published requirements are:

• Early enrolment (4 May – 11 June 2026): at least 620 points in each of the two sections. In this phase the route also covers the Civil Engineering laurea programme delivered in English.
• Later phases (phases 2 to 4): a converted score of at least 30/100.
• Registration closes at 11:59 CEST on 4 June 2026, and SAT sittings from 1 January 2025 to 4 May 2026 are eligible.

For 2027/2028 the bar rises sharply and the window narrows: the SAT route applies to the early phase only, for Italian-taught courses, and requires a converted score of at least 75/100. Eligible sittings run from 1 September 2025 to 31 August 2026, with registration closing 31 August 2026. The score-report code is 7364.

Read that pair of years together, because it tells you something about direction: the same university that accepts a converted 30/100 in the later phases of one intake wants 75/100 in the only phase it offers the following year. Planning a Politecnico application around the SAT means planning around a specific intake, not around the university.

So which test should you sit?

The decision follows from your programme list, not from which test you prefer:

1. Bocconi, or a business or economics programme that names the SAT. Sit the SAT. Aim above 1040 with both sections above 520, and remember that a pre-2022 score is worth nothing there.
2. English-taught engineering, economics, pharmacy or sciences elsewhere in Italy. Sit CEnT-S. The SAT will not substitute for it unless the specific university says so in writing.
3. Italian-taught engineering, including at Politecnico di Milano. Either TOLC-I or the SAT, and here the calculation is practical: the SAT is scored in a system you already understand, but the converted-score bar moves between intakes and the eligible sitting window is narrow. Check the phase you are applying in before committing.
4. Anything else. Assume the TOLC family until the programme page tells you otherwise. Italy has no national SAT route.

What preparing for the SAT does and does not carry over

If you have already prepared for the Digital SAT and then discover your programme wants CEnT-S or TOLC-I, the work is not wasted, but it is not interchangeable either. The mathematics overlaps substantially — algebra, functions, geometry and data interpretation appear in both. What does not carry over is the shape of the test. The Digital SAT is module-adaptive: your performance in the first module decides the difficulty of the second, and pacing strategy is built around that. The TOLC family is not adaptive, is sat in a fixed structure, and includes a logic component that the SAT does not test at all.

The practical consequence is that you can reuse your content preparation and should rebuild your timing strategy from scratch. Students who treat a TOLC as "the SAT in Italian" tend to lose marks on the logic section and mismanage the clock, because they are pacing for an adaptive test that is not adaptive.

Before you book anything

Open the admissions page of the specific degree programme, confirm which test it names for the intake you are applying to, and check the language column. In Italy the language of instruction changes which test applies more often than the subject does, and the rules are revised between intakes. A guide written a year ago will send you to a test that CISIA has already retired.
