Scoring system

How the score is calculated

The basic rules behind the calculator.

Reading and Writing

200800

Section score is computed from raw correct count combined with the inferred Module 2 difficulty path (Easy / Hard).

Math

200800

Section score is computed from raw correct count combined with the inferred Module 2 difficulty path (Easy / Hard).

  • Math has two modules of 22 questions each — Module 2 difficulty depends on Module 1 performance.
  • Reading & Writing has two modules of 27 questions each, also module-adaptive.
  • There is no penalty for wrong answers, so every question should be answered.
  • The total score is the sum of two section scores between 200 and 800.
FAQ

About SAT score calculation

How does the SAT score calculator work?

Enter your Module 1 and Module 2 correct counts for both Reading & Writing and Math. The calculator infers the Module 2 path (Easy or Hard) from Module 1 performance and estimates section scores and the 400-1600 total based on published Bluebook practice test curves.

Will the estimate match my official score?

It is an estimate. College Board uses item response theory with per-question difficulty weights; this calculator approximates the published practice test curves and is typically accurate to within ±20 points.

Why does the Easy Module 2 path cap below 800?

The Digital SAT is module-adaptive. Strong Module 1 performance triggers Hard Module 2; weaker Module 1 leads to Easy Module 2. Because the Easy module's questions are not designed to measure the top band, the section ceiling is around 600. To reach 700+ you must clear the Module 1 threshold.

What is the SAT scored out of?

The total SAT score is a whole number between 400 and 1600. Each of the two sections is scored 200-800 and summed.

Are there penalties for wrong answers?

No. There is no extra penalty for wrong answers, so it is mathematically optimal to answer every question.

What is a good SAT score?

A 'good' score depends on your target university. At selective US universities, 1450-1550+ is the middle range; at the most selective, 1500-1570 is typical. Contact us for a target-score plan.
