SAT Math – Digital SAT Math topics and prep

How Algebra, Advanced Math, Problem Solving & Data Analysis and Geometry & Trigonometry behave on the Digital SAT, plus an effective SAT Math study approach.

Quick answer: what is SAT Math?

The Digital SAT Math section has two modules (22 questions × 35 minutes each). Both modules include the embedded Desmos calculator. Math is scored 200-800 and contributes to the 400-1600 total.

Start with diagnostics

Which Math domain is costing you points?

After a Bluebook-format full Math test, we review right/wrong distribution by sub-topic across Algebra, Advanced Math, PSDA, and Geometry & Trigonometry. You will see clearly which topic to revisit, where time was lost, and where the gap was conceptual.

  • Algebra: speed vs concept gaps?
  • Advanced Math: quadratics and polynomials
  • PSDA: graph and table reading accuracy
  • Geometry & Trigonometry: formula application
  • Module 2 time management and the last 5 questions
  • Weekly homework and wrong-answer analysis

First measure your level, then we'll build the plan.

What each of the four Math domains tests

Algebra

Linear equations, systems and inequalities. The largest single domain in SAT Math — typically 13-15 questions across both modules. Speed and accuracy here are the foundation of every high score.

  • Linear equations in one variable
  • Linear functions
  • Linear inequalities
  • Systems of two linear equations
  • Word problems
Advanced Math

Quadratics, polynomials, exponentials, radicals and rational expressions. Together with Algebra, this is the second largest domain and the main differentiator at top scores.

  • Quadratic equations and functions
  • Polynomial expressions
  • Exponential functions
  • Radicals and rational equations
  • Equivalent expressions
Problem Solving & Data Analysis

Ratios, percentages, probability, and reading data from tables, scatter plots and graphs. Heavily contextual — careful reading is as important as math.

  • Ratios, rates, proportions
  • Percentages
  • Statistics: mean, median, range, deviation
  • Probability and conditional probability
  • Reading tables, graphs, scatter plots
Geometry & Trigonometry

The smallest of the four domains in number of questions, but with high accuracy targets. Coordinate geometry, basic trig, and circle properties.

  • Lines, angles, triangles
  • Right triangles and trig
  • Circles
  • Area and volume
  • Coordinate geometry
Common Mistakes

The most common SAT Math mistakes

  • Misreading the question prompt — answering the wrong unknown.
  • Calculator over-reliance on questions that are faster solved by hand.
  • Spending too much time on a single hard question and losing easy points.
  • Not using Desmos efficiently for graphing equations and systems.
  • Forgetting to translate word problems into equations cleanly.
  • Skipping unit checks — kg vs g, cm vs m.
  • Sign errors in algebraic manipulation, especially with negatives.
  • Not flagging questions to revisit before submitting the module.

FAQ

About SAT Math

Which topics appear in SAT Math?

Four domains: Algebra, Advanced Math, Problem Solving & Data Analysis, and Geometry & Trigonometry. Algebra and Advanced Math carry the highest question weight.

Is a calculator allowed in SAT Math?

Yes. The Desmos-based embedded calculator is available in every Math module inside Bluebook. Students may also bring their own approved calculator.

How many questions and minutes in Math?

Math has two modules. Each module has 22 questions in 35 minutes. Module 2's difficulty is adaptive based on Module 1 performance.

Which Math topics matter most for top scores?

Reaching the Hard version of Module 2 requires near-flawless Module 1. Algebra must be fast and accurate; Advanced Math (especially quadratics and polynomials) is decisive for top scores.
